   Après une semaine passée avec le NV40, je dois avouer que je suis un peu déçu par la qualité de l’appareil : un trackpad qui a un effet très cheap et assez agaçant à utiliser, des plastiques qui n’inspirent pas la solidité et qui se plient sous la pression autour de l’écran ou encore le clavier qui n’est pas fantastique à l’utilisation. Je dois tout de même noter que l’écran est d’une qualité remarquable et parfaitement calibré et que l’autonomie est vraiment bonne (presque 8h d’autonomie avec Firefox ouvert et libreoffice pour taper mes cours).
   Du point de vue du service, l’envoi fut rapide et l’équipe NovaCustom se tient à la disposition de l’acheteur pour toutes questions et support de l’appareil. Cependant, il y a quelques problèmes : l’installation de coreboot n’est pas entièrement réalisée puisque je ne peux pas mettre à jour le firmware via fwupd (mises à jour de capsule UEFI indisponibles ou non activées dans la configuration) dès la sortie de boîte. Je dois donc me débrouiller pour configurer tout cela moi-même… au risque de casser mon système…
   Bref, ex-utilisateur de ThinkPad, je dois dire que cet appareil est un trop cher pour ce qu’il est mais malgré cela, je pense que NovaCustom est sur la bonne voie pour devenir un excellent revendeur d’ordinateurs sous Linux !

     Merci pour votre feedback très utile !

     J’utilise la Série NV40 aussi. Bien qu’il existe des ordinateurs portables qui sont encore meilleurs en termes de qualité de fabrication, je dirais que ces points sont plutôt moyens que mauvais.

     Le moyen le plus accessible et simple pour mettre à jour le firmware coreboot est de passer par la Dasharo Tools Suite (DTS). J’avoue que les choses sont un peu compliqué pour l’instant au vue qu’on passe au firmware EC qui est également open-source. Cette transition est un peu difficile et l’équipe du firmware est en train d’améliorer la documentation sur ce sujet. Pour l’instant, nous serions heureux de vous aider par e-mail pour la mise à jour du firmware (BIOS et Embedded Controller (EC)). Je vais bientôt écrire un article qui devrait clarifier le processus.

   Ich war lange auf der Suche nach einem Linux-Laptop Vertreiber. Ich bin mit dem Preis-Leistungsverhätniss sehr zufrieden. Was ich besonders Schätze sind die vielen Schnittstellen. Viele moderne Laptops vor allem im kleineren Formfaktor begnügen sich mit ein paar USB-C Anschlüsse, hier kann der Laptop glänzen.
   Coreboot funktioniert einwandfrei. Ich hab den Laptop jetzt mit mehreren Distros getestet und es lief immer alles problemlos.
   Derzeit ist jedoch noch ein kleiner Bug in der Firmware vorhanden, was die nicht US Tastaturen betrifft. Durch Open-Source-Firmeware und einem aktiven Entwicklerteam lässt sich jedoch auf Github feststellen, dass dieser bereits bearbeitet wurden und mit dem nächsten Firmwareupdate behoben werden sollte. Auch hier muss ich den Support von Wessel klein Snakenborg einmal mehr loben, welcher mir auf meine Frage hin sofort den entsprechenden Link zukommen lies.

   I am very surprised with NovaCustom. I bought an NV40 and right from the start I was well taken care of. My order had a special keyboard layout that unfortunately was not compatible with the model, but the NovaCustom employees gave me all the necessary support to install a keyboard that suited me, shortly after that the laptop was dispatched and delivered quickly. Regarding the product: I had no difficulty changing the memory modules (because I wanted to reuse some I already had), the boot time is satisfactory, the hardware configuration is exactly what I requested and I can install Linux from my choice without problems. Highly recommend and hope to buy from them again when I change my equipment

   Ich habe mir das Laptop gekauft für meine reisen, es past perfekt in meinem Rucksack da es leicht genug ist. Als Webentwickler oder Programmierer im generellen und Linux benutzen klar zu empfehlen. Ich habe PopOS als meine Distro gewählt funktioniert einwandfrei. Für alle die auf der suche nach einem Linux laptop sind und Open-Source lieben sind hier richtig.

   Die Kaufabwicklung/Lieferung erfolgte so, wie ich mir einen reibungslosen Ablauf vorstelle. Vom Notebook selber – Qualität, Einrichtung sowie Handhabung – bin ich begeistert. Es ist eine Wohltat, wenn ein Rechner nicht mit vorinstallieren Programmen zugemüllt ist. Wünschenswert wäre noch eine deutschsprachige Anleitung, da auf Eurer Homepage nur eine englischsprachige vorhanden ist.

   Hey there! I’d like to share with you my experience with NovaCustom.

   The website and its laptop configurator are very thorough, I could easily configure the personal maxed-out portable workstation I was looking for. Being able to set the keyboard to Spanish was a nice touch, since I haven’t worked on one of those for years living in Germany. I had a brief email conversation with Wessel about some problems I had with the credit card, but everything worked out perfectly in the end. He was helpful and courteous.

   The service is outstanding! The laptop was put together literally in a morning, and the next day it was arriving in my house, complete with DHL tracking all the way. They even sent a message to my phone! Pretty amazing indeed. As for the laptop, it works perfectly fine, the materials feel nice and the open source coreboot stuff is very interesting. I’m also pretty glad that these laptops are ready for self-maintenance, and the peace of mind that basically all spare parts for this specific model are readily available right here in NovaCustom.

   Very highly recommended, you guys are simply fantastic at your thing 🙂

   So, after a long journey to get a well balanced Linux compatible laptop, I came across NovaCustom after some extensive research. And a few ill-fated experiments with some recent models from HP, which made quite some trouble with integrated sound and fan profiles when I tried my most beloved Linux distros on it (mainly Ubuntu, Debian and Pop_OS!). My hope for the NV40 was pretty high. And I am very pleased by the quality of the hardware and the overall look. Especially the dark blue tone, it’s nothing you can make out by looking at it. Color is there when you look closely enough, almost like a cool easter egg. 🙂

   Debian 12 and Pop_OS! run like a charm on this hardware. The build quality for this pricing range is actually very good, mostly for the excellent display and for my taste absolutely comfortable keyboard (including the backlights, which is a great feature in any case). The i5 configuration is pretty beefy, I use my Pop_OS! installation currently for every day private things and some easy gaming with Steam, Lutris and Retroarch. So, you can game on this machine as well, if you’re into titles from a few years ago, or for some nostalgic journeys with your Good Old Games archive.

   Sounds like 5 star rating for this product, but why only 4 instead? Well, the touchpad is a bit of a mix for me. It works well most of the time, but the mouse cursor just get stuck in some cases, the left/right click option with the respective lower corners of the pad feel a bit “wonky”. Somehow, it works, but it also feels a bit too much like “just plastic”. If you have been using touchpads from more expensive laptops like Apple, Lenovo, HP, you immediately feel the difference. I’ve switched to “one finger left click, two finger right click” under Pop_OS! for now, which works pretty well. And I bought a decent wireless mouse when I want to use the notebook in a more stationery situation.

   I am very pleased with this product. And I love the thought of having everything under my control, from the BIOS to the deep of my chosen OS. Also, being able to just order specific sparte parts and repair the device myself, it’s just a sustainable approach I really want to support.
